After an unforeseen time-warp going instantly from June to September (I think a lot of stuff happened--I'm not sure...) I now find myself actually beginning work on the studio. My summer ceramics class ended and along with it, my studio access there. I really need a place of my own to work. I did join a local pottery guild which gains me use of their studio, glazes and kiln. While that will hold me over for a while, the show must go on!
So, without further adieu, I present my official studio plans.
I've dabbled with Google Sketchup before, so I figured it would be the perfect tool to construct my plans. There are basically two basement rooms (mostly) designated as studio space. The larger room to the left will be the kiln room. The furnace, hot water heater, and a sump pump are all located in this space near the chimney foundation. There is a door connecting to our 'finished' basement room and a staircase leading to an exterior door (which will be most useful for loading and unloading clay, supplies, and projects.) The second room on the right will be the working studio space. Here I'll set up an electric wheel, utility sink with clay trap, 4' base cabinets with counter top, a wedging table, and plenty of shelf space for projects and supplies. In this room, the floor will be stained a natural brown with a high gloss sealer. Two walls are cinder block, but the paneled walls will be painted flat-studio-white (which should brighten things up a bit.) The ceiling will be exposed rafters with a track light fixture. I'll probably add more lights as time goes on; I'm a bit of a nut about quality lighting.
Now that the plans have been made, supplies and equipment ordered, and procrastination finally quelled, it is time for me to begin actual work. The first project coming up will be cleaning the floor, staining and sealing. The rest will be soon to follow. Keep checking for updates!
